As tornado and hurricane season approach, IPHC members are learning how best to serve when diaster strikes. More than 80 volunteers from seven IPHC conferences attended the 2012 DRUSA training, held March 16-17 at the Cornerstone Conference facilities near Greensboro, N.C.

"The interest for Disaster Relief Ministry is on the rise in IPHC Ministries," said DRUSA Director Rev. Bill Terry.

Terry also said this was the largest training event to date for DRUSA.

Attendees received certification in proper food handling and food services through Serv Safe. The Serv Safe Food Handler Program delivers food safety training in five areas:

  • basic food safety
  • cross-contamination & allergens
  • cleaning & sanitation
  • personal hygiene
  • time & temperature

In addition to two days of classes, attendees were required to pass a written exam at the end of the training session in order to receive certification.

Terry said this vital training will continue to strengthen the IPHC's Mobile Feeding Kitchen, which is often called into action when disaster strikes. "With tornado season and the arrival of hurricane season, DRUSA and the Mobile Feeding Kitchen are preparing and stand ready to deployment," he said. "The team will get the job done and we will be ready to respond."
