Second of Seven Presentations

Pray for the Harvest

By Rev. Jewelle E. Stewart, Executive Director of Women's Ministries

The concept of harvest is familiar to people throughout the world. Every people group that exists, or has ever existed, has depended upon some form of harvest for sustenance. Included in the first blessing God spoke to Adam and Eve was the charge for them to subdue the earth or conquer and bring it into subjection (see Genesis 1:28). Biblical history tells about people whose lives were built around times and seasons related to the harvest. In much of the world today that is still true.

The scriptures were also written by people whose lives were tied to the soil and to the harvest. Through the scriptures, we learn of the Heavenly Father’s passion and pursuit of all who are dead in trespasses and sin (see Ephesians 2:1-8). Three of the feasts the children of Israel were instructed to celebrate reveal His plan for a spiritual harvest.1 From Genesis to the present age, God’s love and tender mercy, even to the most outcast sinner, is demonstrated.

Past generations have experienced times of harvest even in the darkest periods of history. Today over six billion souls are alive. Christ died for every one, but more than one-half have never heard the good news of Jesus Christ for the first time and more than 3,000 people groups do not have even one Bible verse in their language.2 The church is facing harvest fields of greater proportion than previous generations could imagine.

Through faith in God’s promises, believers today can claim the many blessings found in the written Word of God. The blessings of God will be released when believing Christians become focused and persistent in prayer. Adam’s charge is our charge: go out and subdue the earth. Abraham’s blessing is still operative: everywhere the soles of our feet touch, we can claim for Christ.

The fields are white now. God’s will is for a spiritual harvest today, and He has a clear plan to engage every Christian in reaping this tremendous harvest for His glory!
