Hurricane Floyd Updates

The following is an update on Hurricane Floyd and its impact on the N.C. Conference. At 2:30 p.m. Superintendent Long requested that the General Superintendent declare the N.C. Conference a disaster area. At 4:15 p.m. Bishop James Leggett approved the request. Information and guidance are being issued at this time. The following is an update of what is currently known about the disaster.

David Callahan, director of N.E.T. MultiMedia, and I have toured the Goldsboro area with Pastor Jimmy Whitfield and video taped the damage and talked to several who have been touched by the floods.

Their hope is that we- in our efforts to help- will plan to target our churches in the target area and send relief supplies etc straight to a designated church that will then be able to get the materials out to those in the surrounding area.

For the present , the Hurricane Floyd Updates will focus on the North Carolina Conference. We do check with South Carolina, East Virginia and Mid-Atlantic..and should information on late reports of damage from those areas occur..they will be included in the Update.

Obtaining work sites for potential incoming disaster recovery teams is being hampered by continuing rain and rising water.

Lesson Learned- one group of supplies that has drawn significant need are those items dealing with baby food, pampers, hygiene materials.

At this point approximately 100-125 church families have received extensive or total damage to their homes as a result of the flood.

Bishop Leggett surveyed the target area today and was able to stop at numerous locations to speak with pastors and church members . The Bishop made on-site visits in the following areas...Kinston, Grifton, Goldsboro, Greenville and Tarboro.
