Overview
Hurricane Floyd has saturated N.C., with up to 20 inches of rain to date. More rain is expected. The State has indicated that it will be several days before it will begin to have an accurate estimate on the damage. About 300 roads, including parts of I-95 and I-40 remained closed on Sunday ... and an estimated 6,400 people were in shelters. 21 people confirmed dead. Oak Island, NC .. 15 to 20 foot storm surge pounded the Island with 100 homes destroyed and 100 more severely damaged. Greenville, a city of 44,000, faces worse flooding when the Tar River crests today .. when more rain is expected.
N.C. Conference
Wilson area - Extensive damage throughout the area; Shiloh PHC .. two families lost homes.
- Kinston First - Serving as Red Cross site. Downtown Kinston will be evacuated this afternoon due to floods.
- Greenville First - 10 families lost homes.
- Carson Memorial and New Life Tabernacle under water.
- Also Carson Newman 20 families flooded out.
- Trenton PHC - under water.
- Vanceboro PHC - flooded.
- Holly Hill PHC - flooded. Families evacuated last night.
- Grifton PHC - under water .. All of Grifton evacuated Sunday.
- Tarboro area - American Red Cross just got in Sunday. Will require Disaster Recovery Teams soon.
- Rocky Mount - expecting flooding.
- Taylor Chapel - Pastor Reuben Bachelor lost home.
- New Bern - no contact.
- New Vision PHC - Church destroyed (tornado).
DRUSA support request
At this time site locations for assistance, teams or food distribution have not been selected. The information above is only a partial report and the Conference has still not been able to make contact with all of its churches or to gain access in most of the target area. Once this has been accomplished, a request will go out for Disaster Recovery Teams ... especially debris cleanup and mud-out operations. The S.C. Mobile Feeding Kitchen is on alert and will move once a site is selected. A list of supplies needed will be sent in a follow-on message.
