Katrina Disaster Relief Update 9/16 to 9/18, 2005

The following is an update on relief support activities for the reporting period September 16, 17, and 18, 2005:

1. Redemption Ministries Conference- (a) Mobile Feeding Kitchen (MFK) support team is on stand by. (b) Conference has a supply load ready to go-but has room so that they can stop en route and pick up supplies form other conference supply points( call me if you can use this-jack kelley 1-888-867-4153)…or can load there supplies on any trucks out of Mid Atlantic, Pa or Home Missions supply trucks going to the Gulf area.. (c) Have three families that will house evacuees when cleared.

2. South Carolina Conference-(a) The SC Mobile Feeding Kitchen reports meal served as follows: 9/15=3,300, 9/16=4,700 ,9/17=4,100. The MFK has been released by the Red Cross and will begin to breakdown its operation Wednesday night and return to South Carolina. NOTE: on 9/16 the MFK had served over 85,000 meals. (b) The Kinston 1st PH church MFK team arrived on 9/17 to begin service (c).Lamar Branum of White Horse Shoals PH is the current MFK director. (d) Christian Assembly in Florence has a support team on stand by consisting of 5 women and 10 men for a 3-4 day deployment.

3. Alpha Conference- (a)Food for the Hungry out of Atlanta, Ga delivered 25 tons of food supplies and health packets to the Distribution Center at New Horizons Ministries PH church that have already been disbursed. (b) The Distribution Center at Moss Point averages 1,000-1,500 people a day being assisted..(c) The DC has given away over 400 tons of non perishable food, health care items, cleaning supplies and clothes.

4. North Carolina Conference-(a) Kinston 1st MFK support team #2- has arrived on site at Moss Point to serve the MFK. (b) Northwood Temple and Mercy Intl shipment of medical supplies and other relief items have been shipped to Kinston, NC for inclusion in the North Carolina supply truck which is on standby to depart.

5. Cornerstone Conference- the conference is using two collection points where conference churches can delivery their supplies (care packages, bottled waters, juices, cleaning supplies and canned food). The locations are (1) Asheville PH and (2) Cornerstone Resource Center.

6. Appalachian Conference- Tree of Life debris clean up/chain saw team is en route to Watson, La to work out of Faith Family church.

Lessons Learned- The IPHC Disaster Relief Manual contains a section (Chapter 4) dealing with “The Local Church”. This chapter contains information/help on the four stages for preparing the local church and its families for a disaster. Also are “help” materials on the identification of skills and talents within the church for disaster, and supply lists for both individual families as well as the church.
