The following is an Update on the disaster relief activities supporting Hurricane Katrina, as of October 21:

Mid South Conference-

  • (a) church buildings- a building owned by the conference has roof damage and interior damage and, the Revival Center in Lake Charles has substantial damages that are being worked on. Repairs on the air condition units estimated at $15,000 repairs are not covered by insurance- the roof has damage and a $5.000 deductible.
  • (b) The Disaster Relief site in Lake Charles, for the conference, is still distributing food which is limited right now- with people in lines for hours to receive food packages.
  • (c) Faith Family Church- this church which serves as shelter will have the expenses (o/a $5,000) to restore/clean their carpet, replace and repair damages to the property and paint and clean floors. This church has provided shelter to over 500 people during the disaster, food and clothing to 1,000 people, provided food and supplies to 5 other churches in the area, 25 evacuees are currently being sheltered, and the church - served as an administrative center to assist evacuees with food stamps, social security forms and FEMA registration. 50 people have been saved and one wedding performed.
  • (d) A recent disaster team was working out of their shelter (Bishop Tony Atkinson’s team)...the Bishop prayed for a child who was scheduled for surgery—when examined again- the hole that had been in his ear was no longer there-PTL.
  • (e) Miracle Place PH has 40 evacuees in house at the present, but have been notified that 123 more will be added by Sunday. Recap- as of this date over 1,100 evacuees have been sheltered in the Miracle Place church

Georgia Conference- a trailer is being loaded at this time and will deploy for the Mid South conference o/a next Friday.

Redemption Ministries Conference- the disaster relief team (8 men) from Stone house PH and Family Worship are on the way home from ministry in the Long Beach, MS area. While there they worked for the New Life Church, replaced a ceramic tile floor in one home, gutted the inside of another and started the repairs on a church roof. Team leader- Randy Hill notes that the real need in that particular area is building supplies-shingles, sheet rock etc.

Mississippi Conference - the New Life church, an independent church) in Long Beach, has hosted several of the disaster relief teams from Redemption Ministries, and has asked to be part of our outreach in that area. The needs they are seeking are debris clean up, chain saw, supply distribution, home repairs, and help in their kitchen.

North Carolina Conference-

  • (a) disaster relief team from Ahoskie is on standby to deploy October 28 to finish sheet rock on two homes,
  • (b) Ministries of Mercy on schedule for mattress delivery to Alpha Conference in November.

Alpha Conference- New Horizons Ministries PH has 4 houses that are now ready and inspected for sheet rock and or new floor. The church has a goal of 50 homes to be restored for occupancy.

Sonshine Conference-

  • (a) Rev Donavan Tinsley has replaced Rev Ron McCants as the Conference DRUSA;
  • (b) Winners Church in West Palm Beach has a team on standby to deploy to Moss Point, MS on the 23rd for sheet rock installation.
