The following is an Update on our Disaster Response as of 5:00 p.m. September 22, 2004: A. Current Situation‑ 1. Hurricane Jeanne‑ strengthening ..at 11:00. a.m. EDT the center was about 530 miles West of Great Abaco Island...movement is toward the South near 5 mph..with a gradual turn towards the Southwest and West during the next 24 hours...maximum sustained winds are near 100 mph.. 2. Hurricane Karl‑continues Northward..at 11:00 a.m. AST the center was about 1490 miles West‑Southwest of the Azores...movement is toward the North near 14 mph with maximum sustained winds at near 105 mph...Slow weakening is forecast during the next 24 hours. 3. Tropical Storm Lisa‑ continues to weaken..at 11:00 a.m. AST the center was about 1165 miles West of the Cape Verde Islands...movement is toward the West‑Southwest near 6 mph and maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph. B. IPHC Items‑ 1. The South Carolina Mobile Feeding Kitchen (MFK) fed 2,703 meals on Tuesday ‑with 1,503 walk‑ins and 1,200 of them by American Red Cross ERVs. Today an additional ERV will be added. NOTE: The MFK is expected to stay in operation through October 2d at this time. The 2d MFK team from South Carolina will deploy on Sunday. 2. Alpha Conference‑ (a) several of the damaged churches have been released by their insurance companies to begin repairs‑the remainder are on hold, (b) the Superintendent is visiting all damaged churches and will complete this within the next two days.(c) tentatively a MFK support team will be ready on Sunday. 3. Georgia Conference‑possibility of two teams to be ready shortly‑expect report in next two days. 4. Cornerstone‑ DRUSA Cornerstone and Harvest Outreach Ministries have coordinated with NORTH Carolina DRUSA for a load of furniture to be delivered to the Baptist Disaster Relief in Haywood County. Possible MFK support team to be ready next week. 5. North Carolina Conference‑(a) MFK support team deployed from Kinston First for Pensacola today. 6. Sonshine Conference‑ working on MFK support team for next week. C. Lessons Learned‑ One of the key items used by the North Carolina Conference DRUSA during Hurricane Floyd was the "Damage Assessment Form"‑ which was issued to those families and churches that had requested financial support. The forms were used to (a) record the request, (b) verify the need and (c) determine what portion of the allocation given to North Carolina would be issued to each verified request. This form will be formalized into a DRUSA Assessment Form and distributed to you in the next two days.. End of Report jack kelley DRUSA |
